This type of treatment involves speaking about problems, and by talking them over, finding solutions to problems. These types of problems are often produced by the stress of modern day living - they can be as diverse as:
- Tension from work
- Family anxieties
- Stress from study and exams
- Worries about money
- Bereavement
- Feeling that you're stuck in a rut
- Relationship problems.
These may leave you with symptoms such as:
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking up several times throughout the night
- Not being able to concentrate on tasks or study
- Being irritable with yourself and other people
- Not being able to see a solution to problems
- Feeling that you're on your own
- Looking for alcohol or pills to 'help' you
- Feeling churned up inside
- Eating/ bingeing to excess
- Headaches
- Tension in your muscles (especially the neck)
- Bowel problems, weakness, etc.
Most people these days, look for a ‘quick fix’ solution - pills such as Valium or Antidepressants such as Zoloft, Prozac, etc. Unfortunately, these often just mask the problem. In counselling, we try to identify the problem and work out a way around it; finding a solution that is possible to put into place, then implementing it. Different strategies are required for different problems, and different types of people. Often, just identifying the problem, and giving ideas on how to overcome it, helps a person. They realise that there is light at the end of the tunnel - giving hope quickly.
I usually talk with people, to try to find what they really want out of life, and develop strategies with them to enable them to look to their futures with more confidence. On occasions, Hypnotherapy can be part of the overall treatment, as it can boost self-control and confidence.Read more about Mind and Body Medicine -
